Space on wheels

I feel pretty sure that no one likes rent (except those collecting the rent, of course), so I don't feel bad admitting it myself.

This doesn't mean that I take issue with trade, however. But when it comes to land... Land gives life. Would you say that someone can own the air you breathe or the water you drink?

If I want to avoid rent, I see only two choices: 1) shed most of my material possessions and hit the road, OR 2) shove my material possessions into a vehicle and... hit the road. As I don't feel spiritually-advanced enough (or whatever) to shed all of my possessions, I pick option #2. I'd still have to pay gas and insurance, of course, along with whatever maintenance costs said vehicle would require, but if I could do some (or most) of that maintenance myself, I expect the benefits of mobility would surpass those of renting.

A little research suggests that it'll cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $5,000-$10,000 to buy an old school bus or a box truck. I'll confess that I only considered school buses at first, since they've got sentimental value and a long tradition of conversions by crazies, but these days I favor box trucks for a couple of reasons:

  • no seats to remove
  • taller box
  • longer usable space (I think?)
  • more robust (?)

I don't know for sure about those last two points, but the first two suffice to lead me to favor box trucks. (TODO: drawbacks to box trucks?)

Anyway, so there! I don't want to spend too much time researching (or dreaming) until I have some money saved up. As most of my other projects depend on having a space, I plan to set aside most of my savings for this. (Unless buying my own piece of land (or sea (or asteroid)) suddenly works out better.) And no, this doesn't conflict with the stated goal of my site ("radical self-sufficiency"): water, food, hygiene and power systems all require careful consideration in a nomadic scenario.

As far as funding goes...
